GAUTAM Adani, chairman of Indian conglomerate Adani Group, on Friday (21) held a meeting with visiting Sri Lankan president Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss several projects in the island-nation which is currently facing an economic turmoil.

The talks included the development of the Colombo Port West Container Terminal (WCT), Adani said, according to Asian News International. They also spoke over a wind project and production of green hydrogen.

In a tweet, Adani said, “Great Honour to have met H.E. President Ranil Wickremesinghe to discuss a fascinating set of projects in Sri Lanka including continued development of Colombo Port West Container Terminal, 500 MW wind project, and extending our renewal energy expertise to produce green Hydrogen.”

Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Limited (APSEZ), a key subsidiary of the diversified Adani Group, received a letter of intent from Sri Lankan authorities in March 2021 for the development and operations of WCT in Colombo.

The WCT will be developed on a build, operation and transfer basis for a period of 35 years as a public-private partnership. The project is likely to boost the WCT’s container-handling capacity and further consolidate the island-nation’s locational advantage as one of the world’s top strategic nodes along the busiest global transhipment route.

The Colombo Port is already the most preferred regional hub for transhipment of Indian containers and mainline ship operators with 45 per cent of Colombo’s transhipment volumes either originating from or destined to an Adani port terminal in India.

The network impact of this partnership is significant and expected to be mutually benefited from the string of seven container terminals across its 12 ports that Adani operates along the Indian coastline handling an annual volume of over 6 million TEUs.

Wickremesinghe, who reached India on Thursday (20) on a two-day visit, met Indian external affairs minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar the same day and was welcomed by India’s junior foreign minister V Muraleedharan.

He met prime minister Narendra Modi on Friday.

It is Wickremesinghe’s first visit to India since assuming responsibilities last year.
